The Alliance Will Conduct The Business Of:

  3. Collect and Manage Data and Information on the battery sector
  4. Research and Develop New and Innovative Battery Technologies
  5. Organize Workshops, Trainings and Capacity Building for Stakeholders, Regulators, Recycling and Renewable Energy Operators.
  6. Support Expansion and Technology Upgrade of the Battery Recycling Value Chain
  7. Initiate Policy Proposals and Guidelines for Responsible Battery management    

The ARBR will ensure that its members are in compliance with every relevant environmental and waste management laws, policies, regulations, guidelines and international treaties incidental to running the businesses of handling and recycling of Used Batteries in Nigeria.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Product Stewardship Programme

  • Battery producers must take the opportunity to lead the design and implementation a nationwide approach to battery recycling. It is crucial to a battery program’s success that everyone plays a role and shares responsibility.
  • Retailers, Recyclers, Businesses, Environmental Groups, Governments and Consumers all need to come together to minimize the depletive impact that batteries can have on our environment and vital natural resources.
  • All companies that sell (new or used) batteries in the Nigerian marketplace must contribute to the cost of mitigating the hazards of collection and recycling activities. Those who make and sell products that contain or utilize batteries should make informed decisions based on the effects of their battery choices and implement battery take-back schemes.
  • ARBR believes that battery manufacturers — regardless of whether their facilities are domestic or foreign — should support the costs of recycling. If they do not, common sense and basic fairness requires that the product producer or retailer is obligated to support that effort.

The Used Battery Value Chain

Used batteries have an economic value based on the market cost of metals contained in them especially lead. Used batteries contain recyclable metals and materials that can be recovered for the production of new batteries. Recovery of lead from batteries is easier and requires significantly less energy than producing primary lead from ore.

Field investigations by REDIN found that Nigeria has a fairly organized informal collection, transportation and recycling system for used lead acid batteries, all forming part of a collection pool for the used battery exports to countries in Europe, Asia and North America.

Usually, batteries are collected by battery retailers or scrap dealers from around the major cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Asaba, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Ogun etc., and transported to Lagos state where most of the primary recycling takes place.

The process of collection, storage, transportation and recycling of used batteries, though economically viable, causes hazardous acids, lead and other dangerous metals to be indiscriminately released into the environment.

ARBR Mission

Our Mission encompasses working with Battery Manufacturers, Importers, Distributors, Retailers, Recyclers, Renewable Energy Operators, Environmental Groups, and Governments across the country, in executing programmes and projects that promote the removal of used batteries from the normal waste stream, ensure their environmentally sound recycling, build capacity and knowledge, and create public awareness on the hazards of improper battery disposal.
